Green Planet

Green Planet is a project started with an aim to “protect restore and promote sustainable use of territorial eco systems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.”

This project is under SDG14 and involves the use of technology for environment protection. This projected was awarded by the National Geographic Society for innovative use of technology for environment protection.

The project includes a 5 year plan that uses sensors to map areas for tree plantation. His school being in a drought prone district he realized the need to map areas where trees can be planted. Through this project the green area in Paritewadi district has increased from 25 to 33% and 250 hectares of land surrounding the village has been saved from desertification. As part of the project the students make environmental report cards of their villages/towns/cities to understand the ripple effect of global warming.

To make these report cards they interact with villagers to find out the population of the village, how many trees are there in the village, details of families, use of LPG, mobiles, TV’s, vehicles, and details of water sources. Following this green map is prepared to assessing the green area and action plans are made.

They classify trees as A, B, C and D and then analyse and discuss the problems around them with experts and find solutions to protect the trees and create sustainable ecosystems.

The Green Planet project was awarded the Wipro Nature for Society award in 2018.
